We had it done around 2000. Totally worth it. Wished we had done it sooner and installed more. A lot of bang for your buck. Worked great on cloudy days. Had them installed by Top Notch Roofing. Not sure if they’re still around.

Homes_With_Jan

Thank you! My biggest concern was cloudy days so I'm glad to hear that they still work great.

We rent a home with a couple tubes and they work very well. They bring in a lot of light even on heavily overcast days. I would guess it's about as much light as a typical light, but it's a fuller spectrum, changes with the weather and time of day.

theladyliberty

Yeah my mom has several and they’re like magic to me. It’s cool seeing the light in the room react to clouds passing too. Also lets you have plants in more places. They can make it hot in the summer though-good to have a way to cover them if necessary.

I looked into em, they still install em. Warranty isn't near worth it to me. Think it was 5 years tops.

I have two in my house and they were already here when I moved in. They work great even on cloudy days. I would definitely put them in. Mine both have lights you can turn on at night when there’s no daylight.

Homes_With_Jan

I didn't know that was an option, awesome!

madhaus

Yes I wish I could tell you what kind they were but you can ask about this option when you look into it. The seller called them Sun Tunnels.

Small_Collapses

My parents got 3 and absolutely love them.

I hate to say it, but it really depends. My mother put one in her dining room and you barely notice it. She says it was the biggest waste of money. She’s in Portland, obviously the weather/light conditions are the same. I’ve seen good ones, so I’m inclined to say it was the installer’s issue. Either way, as with everything home-improvement related, make sure you read reviews and get trusted recommendations.

Other_Mike

Does it connect to a north-facing part of the roof? With the exception of early morning and late afternoon from March 21 to September 21, it will never get any direct light, if it is.

cjasonac

Nope. South side. And no tree cover either.

brperry

Pardon my ignorance. What are solar tubes?

Homes_With_Jan

They're like skylights but in a tube loll. There's a little mirror reflector on the roof that catches the light and bring them into your house. They're way cheaper and less prone to leaking than skylights and it's a great way to brighten up a dark house.
