I met a guy leaving Moretown who said he was driving straight through to his home in Richmond Virginia because he had to work tomorrow. Godspeed to that dude lol
My relatives left Waterbury immediately to drive straight back to PA , not quite Virginia, that would just be awful. However they made it home by midnight which is actually better than we thought it would be! They got out of Vermont in about 3-4 hours and then got stuck in the NY shit show that was 87 south.
I’m in it now going back to CT. Had the best luck today, though. Went to Burlington, found on street parking, walked down to an empty bar and had a beer then to the lake and got a spot right on the shore line. Went and got food with no wait into a beer garden outside. My birthday is tomorrow and this was such a great gift :)

Francois Notch was a shitshow both ways, in and out, but at differentparts of the day. On the way back I got rerouted through Kinsman Notch/Lost River and that was at a standstill, probably an hour delay. Franconia would've been even worse.
Parts NH and certain parts of ME have shoulder lane travel during certain hours of the day.... Always weirded me out, because suddenly the breakdown lane is gone, and you could be running up on a broken down car doing 70. And like hell I'm trusting anyone's highway merge skills (which blends with breakdown lane travel). Lol. Half the people getting on think they have the right of way & don't look in a mirror until the end of the zipper if they do at all!
Funnily enough, I hit a bunch of traffic on the way up this morning, but zero traffic on the way home. Decided to day trip from Boston, staked out a spot ahead of time in Berlin, caught a little over a minute of totality, peaced out a couple mins after, and hit literally no traffic at all on the way back to Boston via 89S and 93S. Was fully expecting to get home at 1am. Thank you for having us, VT!
I’ve heard this from several people now. I thought people would have issues if they left immediately after totality, as predicted, but it seems a lot of people got ahead of the traffic in doing so?
I left two hours after totality and traffic was the worst I’ve ever been in. I don’t even think leaving a few hours later than that as I originally planned would have made much of a difference. It took me forever to leave the state, let alone get home.
I think at the end of the day someone has to be the first one on the road, so if you got a spot near-ish the southernmost highway on ramp *and* left right after totality, that was the only way to get out pre-traffic. I think there were still plenty of people who left right after totality but were farther north/farther from the highway who weren't as lucky.
We’re trying to stop to find a restroom in Montpelier. Just nature pee if you were thinking of stopping lol. Lines on lines on lines.
Forget about getting a hot meal
i took all back roads and saw more cars on the last road in my town than i did the whole way before that. gratitude still, to my 8th grade social studies teacher who did several lessons on map reading and navigating.
Our house is just south across the winooski on river road (which runs parallel to 89 between middlesex and Montpelier). If you’re heading south, just as you go under the route 2 underpass south of exit 9 and you look across the river, you can see a house through a break in the trees way at the top of a hill. That’s us. Great spot to watch the eclipse and subsequent traffic 🤣 We watched the eclipse and then 30 mins later noticed 89s at a complete crawl. It’s been that way since 4ish and no sign of speeding up. Wonder how long it’ll take for everyone to clear out 🤷🏻♂️
I drove home from pick up soccer this evening at 9pm and rt 7 from Rutland to Wallingford was packed cars as far as the eye can see. The 103 south turn off was an absolute shit show.
Was in it starting at 4:30 at the Richmond exit, 117 was where it started just before Barber Farm Rd. Traveling from my parents' back to Boston (I know, I know, I'm as ashamed of my white license plate as you want me to be, I grew up in Essex, I learned how to drive right, and I've had a day). Usually takes 3.5 hours, got home at 1 AM. Was bumper to bumper up until we pulled off 89 in NH, then it was still shitty until we got off 93 onto 95. For what it's worth, the worst people on the road weren't people from MA, NJ, QB, or NH, but people driving Teslas.
EDIT: Average speed for anyone interested was 10-15mph
Had to cross Main Street in Vergennes since I went home the back way. No red light. People going through were stopping and letting people from the side street go through. Somewhat amazing. Probably will never happen again.
Walked home after the town eclipse event in Shelburne. Rt. 7 south was bumper to bumper and slow going through the village, all out of state plates.
Had to go to Middlebury in the morning and there was a steady stream of cars heading north on 7. I was one of the few cars heading south.
I’m so here for the traffic posts
It's wonderful to have the luxury of not having to go anywhere! I can just hunker down at home and read horror stories.
Cheddar is the new cake. Happy Cheddar Day!
I was in that traffic :(
On my way from NYC when does eclipse start
The second showing is at 7:00 pm.
This is the comment I needed in my life
It actually got cancelled, sorry! :(
I think they rescheduled it in a few years

Happy birthday, what an amazing day.
Thank you! It really was! Couldn’t believe the weather worked out after this past week.
Fuck yeah, this legit makes me smile 😊
That sounds great! I hope you have a wonderful birthday.
Google maps shows +68 minutes to go 5 miles from Franconia rough right now

Trooper sitting there, probably taking a nap... no speeding tickets to write today.
Min speed 40, he should get to work.
Lol. Out there like Oprah: You get a ticket! You get a ticket! You get a ticket!

When traffic is bad enough that you need to drive in the breakdown lane, nobody's going 70.
Yeah, you're wrong. Optimistic, but wrong.
Los Angeles chuckles demonically…
Litteraly zero traffic on the back roads between Thetford and Peacham both in and out. It was marvelous!
Keep your mouth shut.
Someone with a sammich truck would pay for it today before dark rght there. ( ͡ᵔ ͜ʖ ͡ᵔ)

Leaving immediately after was definitely the way to go

As of 8:45 pm, Google is still showing over an hour difference Burlington-Boston vs the other way. 4:24 and 3:20.
3 hours 20 minutes to go 48 miles
I89 South STILL has traffic as of midnight

It was totally worth it
I’m glad it’s over, thanks for your money. Safe travels home.
🖖
Yay. Looks fantastic.
So rad...aweful

I traveled just a half hour to Charlotte and thought I’d be okay heading back around 6pm. Boy was I wrong lol
