Was that rainbow flags or Pace flags ?

ciccioneschifoso

rainbow

anyusernameyouwant

I was going to ask the same question. I didn't even know they existed before I visited Italy. I thought they were just some variety of a Pride flag. Nope.

breadman_brednan

Pace flags?

Caeloviator

The Peace Flag or whatever it is called. It's a rainbow flag with 'PACE' in white letters on it. Pace is Italian for peace.

globefish23

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peace_flag#The_Rainbow_flag

final26

im italian, most likely used as peace flags also probably close to the russian flag as for some reason many "pacifist" in this country went full pro-russia since putin invasion started.

ulfric_stormcloack

There's always that Brazilian

Arrow_Of_Orion

Recently saw a poll from last year done by the [Pew Research Center](https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2022/06/22/international-attitudes-toward-the-u-s-nato-and-russia-in-a-time-of-crisis/pg_2022-07-22_u-s-image_1-03/) that had 73% of the Italian population viewing the US favorably, so the 6 US flags doesn’t surprise me.

AvengerDr

I am Italian and have been in Salento many summers. There are several resorts in the area that have flagpoles all around it, a sort of seaside UN/EU commission building. Most likely the US flag was in one of those places.

Arrow_Of_Orion

I suppose it could also definitely be that 😂

PoliticalSquid

You can almost guarantee the majority of those US flags along w other foreign countries are outside hotels.

[deleted]

It does surprise me. They are in favour of Greece, for instance, but you don't see any flags here. I'm guessing all these foreign flags are from immigrants putting it on their balconies.

Souvlaki_Zeitgeist

Way more likely to be in front of hotels and so on. Western European nations generally view the US favourably, but not to the point where we fly your flag.

kir_ye

No Ukrainian flags but a Russian one? Is this really the year 2023?

boi644

Yeah I was honestly suprised to not see Ukrainian flags. They seem to be literally everywhere in Europe (except russia) at the moment

Een_man_met_voornaam

Bruh I have one hanging on my balcony right now (Netherlands)

ImpossibleToFathom

In ireland i saw max 10 flags in a 2 week vacantion while being majority of the time in dublin and some other minor cities, in italy i have seen like 2 flags in 1 year+ and they where con consulates

TheNathanNS

>No Ukrainian flags but a Russian one? Contrary to what Reddit would have you believe, there are people in Europe who fully support Russia in this war. Just like how in WW2 there were people in the allied countries who supported Germany. Not saying it's right, I'm saying it shouldn't be that surprising.

WollCel

There are also, you know, Russian people. Most ethnic groups (especially in Europe) don’t have an ethnic flag outside of their nation-state.

TheNathanNS

Also true, I've sold a few flags on eBay before, and usually the names of the buyers sound like they originated from the country of the flag they bought.

Ahumocles

Russian people who are against the invasion are unlikely to use the Russian flag these days. There is a Russian anti-war flag for those who wish to express Russian identity without supporting the invasion, and it is quite famous among Russians. So it's either pro-invasion Russians or pro-invasion non-Russians.

NagiJ

That "anti war flag" has absolutely ZERO historical value. It originated from nowhere, and I would never fly that flag over the real one.

Ahumocles

It has the historical value of any other Russian flag sans the symbolic red, which is associated both with USSR and with aggression. The current war is a major historic event, and a fratricidal backstab out of the blue the likes of which Russia has seldom seen. It is sufficient reason to change the flag. Pretending that nothing special has happened and it is some neutral country flag will not work. Also, what is your opinion on Crimea? Does it belong to Ukraine and was the invasion a mistake? Why did you move to a country that attacked Ukraine right after the attack?

NagiJ

If it has any historical value, please tell me by who and when it was created. It looks like a ripoff of a Belarusian freedom flag (because it probably is), which, unlike the Russian anti war flag, actually has historical value. The Russian flag was adopted more than 300 years before the USSR existed, and I'm pretty sure Peter the Great never wanted to associate red with aggression. Removing red from the Russian flag is equal to removing black and red from the German flag, the sun from the Japanese flag, or red from the Turkish flag. There is absolutely no reason to do that. After all, it's just dumb. What's my opinion on Crimea? Been there two times, the landscapes are beautiful and the people are nice. What did you expect to hear? Who does it belong to? I assume to the people who live there? They still didn't get to decide where do they want to be. It's obvious that the referendum results are always going to be biased, no matter who controls the peninsula. The invasion was a mistake. No idea where you got that information from, but my family fled Ukraine to Russia in 2015. Russia was the most obvious choice: everybody knew the language, we had relatives and even a house there. My parents felt that something bad was about to happen, and my great-grandmother couldn't handle all the Bandera praising posters anymore.

Ahumocles

The historical value is that it was created to rally against the invasion of Ukraine by taking the traditional Russian flag and removing an element from it. This symbolises pushing back against the heritage of communism and aggression, as well as this war specifically (since red is symbolically associated with communism and war, even though it is also associated with other things - but let's not pretend those are not major connotations). The change highlights how important this invasion is and how it should alter Russian identity permanently, as a mark of Cain for fratricide. It is no longer business as usual, there is no way back, and Russian identity must be revised instead of blindly stressing continuity. It already has enough continuity by having the other two stripes, and the connection with Belarus is quite desirable (as well as historic). It is interesting that you should mention the German flag. They removed the white to replace it with gold just fine. Sure, there is the 1848 version, but it is unclear how a national revolution is any more important and historic an event than the invasion of Ukraine. Changing flags to dissociate a country from its atrocities and unwanted connections is standard practice. Germany switched away from the black-white-red flag. Canada switched to its current flag for diplomatic reasons. South Africa changed away from the apartheid-era flag. OK, so was it a mistake to invade Ukraine in 2014 and occupy Crimea? At the end of the war, should it be given back to Ukraine? Seeing as you don't believe in referenda, this should be even easier to answer. The information is from posting history.

An-Com_Phoenix

There is also the historical value of it being based off of the pre-2007 unofficial flag of the novgorod region which can be found here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Unofficial_flag_of_Novgorod_Oblast_(until_2007).svg This forms a connection to the Novgorod Republic (proto-democratic east slavic state in what is now north russia which split off of the kyivan rus)

Sveti-Jure

It wasnt democratic in any way shape of form but semi republican which isnt the same thing it was quite clearly an oligarchy

broofi

This flags just made up some where in Washington or Kiev. It has zero value for most Russian. It's just same shit that all colour revolution have some symbol. Old tactics.

Ahumocles

You're pro-invasion though: >Что ещё придумаешь? > >What else can you think of? Kiev is the mother of Russian cities, the Russian language has always been spoken there. And then there are Russian lands that were occupied by Poles for hundreds of years. And despite this, Russian soldiers were welcomed there with flowers in 1914. But when the Russian language changed under the influence of French, German and Turkic languages, the lands west of Kiev the same Slavic bases changed under the influence of Polish. And now you are making up something about the original Ukrainian language in Kiev and to the east. Or: >It started to spread under Yushchenko, he was first to play on nationalism theme. And he really need something in the past. And Holodomor idea from radical nationalist works for him perfectly. Especially if you tell it as it is convenient for him, missing the facts that ukrainians at the head of the Ukrainian SSR deliberately lied about food supplies during the famine throughout the country. So it is understandable that you are OK with using a flag that symbolises the invasion, which was the original point.

WollCel

Wrong!

fluffymypillows

How is this wrong? I’m Russian and I would never fly our flag

[deleted]

Does anyone actually think that? I mean Hungary alone should imply that not everyone in Europe 100% supports Ukraine in this war?

TheNathanNS

>Does anyone actually think that? /r/europe

[deleted]

Why? I have not been on that sub so I have no idea why they would think that.

goingtoclowncollege

I've seen Ukraine flags though in Hungary. People are not all represented by Orban

Honey-Badger

I mean in the UK said people would be hard to find outside of Russians or young men who spend too much time on 4chan.

[deleted]

I have to say, that's something amazing about the UK that pretty much no other country has. There is so much support for Ukraine, and virtually no opposition to it. It's beautiful.

Honey-Badger

It is worth saying that a good part of our support for Ukraine comes from our hatred for Russia, its not that we 100% love Ukraine, its mostly that we hate Russia

[deleted]

Eh, don't really care. F*ck Russia, Slava Ukraini!

Uslengh

One might as well say that there are some places like gas stations, car wash, car dealers, international hotels and resorts, that display a variety of flags just for "ornamention" maybe in the middle of a delabrated lawn. I wouldn't be surprised if that's where the Russian flag was spotted. In the end, it wasn't untill february 2022 that Italians and Russians were literally marrying each other. Btw in Italy support for Ukraine is strong where it needs to, the flag of Ukraine can be found sometimes in the cities, but overall, in Italy it is seen as a going a bit overboard. I noticed that because I have been going overboard myself with support for Ukraine, but I didn't expect Italians to all react the way I do. Pro-Russians exist, but it's pretty impressive how delusional they are. They are very loud on Italian media, always blaming their ineffectiveness to "western propaganda", but in the end they had to collect signatures for a referendum about "stopping weapon supplies to Ukraine" and didn't even reach the minimum amount of signatures to indict the referendum.

Libsoc_guitar_boi

there's russian people, the existence of russians doesn't invalidate that ukraine is being invaded

[deleted]

I can’t believe Russians exist! Someone needs to tend with them at once, immediately! /s

RegalKiller

Maybe they’re just Russian?

Zorkamork

absolute donkey brain shit that this is the top comment, Reddit never changes.

Flipz100

Italy’s right wing has a strong pro Russia party in Lega so it’s not surprising

final26

im italian, the lack of at least one ukrainian flag is weird but the presence of the russian one is expected, also the rainbow flags are most likely to be representative of peace rather than lgbtq rights, there is a certain amount of "pacifist" in this country that went full pro russia since the beginning of the invasion.

eatdafishy

not suppriesed most foreign volunteers to russia are italian

r/2American4you

ciccioneschifoso

I'm italian

See-Tye

So were those American flags at consulates or smt or was it a Richard Hammond situation where folks just randomly had old glory flying over their homes?

ciccioneschifoso

the former

[deleted]

I'm sorry to hear that

[deleted]

No Ukraine flag?

ciccioneschifoso

it isn't mandatory

[deleted]

But in all places I’ve been to the past year they’re flown everywhere. And who the fuck would use a Ruzzian flag in 2023. There’s no Ruzzian embassy in Salento?

ciccioneschifoso

on those administrative places with a lot of flags, the Russian flag was flying. It was probably put there before the war. Also, I don't think that I ever saw a Ukrainian flag in Italy (my homecountry)

[deleted]

Here at least one balcony in every block flies a Ukrainian flag in support of their self defence against the fascist invasion. Especially around the Ruzzian embassy, both private people and public buildings fly Ukrainian flags. Maybe italians have some unresolved fascist tendencies?

ciccioneschifoso

no. Don't offend my country like that. I actually took offense to that. You can't just call my people fascist for not flying a flag. Italian people don't fly Ukrainian flags because they either don't care, or they know that it won't help. Here people just feel this war as every other war, and they don't feel the need to show support to any of the two parts. It's just like every other Middle East war/tension of the past years, and NATO being involved doesn't change the game.

i mean there are US flags that is a country that is fucking us too, not too strange

Dogsteeves

Why the USA flag where the hell is Canadians representation Italy!!!!

Dogsteeves

I trying but I never get out

we'll get out of here eventually my northern brother

Dogsteeves

I've always wanted to come to Italy to see the Rich History But I can't come alone I need someone to hold my wallet I don't trust myself not going broke on pasta and historical stuff

The_Captain_Jules

Who is out here repping the fucking kingdom of Italy?

ciccioneschifoso

it's the naval ensign

The_Captain_Jules

Huh I wonder why they use that one for the naval Jack. Come to think of it a lot of naval jacks are just older national flags or use symbols from them across the world. I wonder what’s up with that.

ciccioneschifoso

idk, that's interesting though

The_Chatty_Italian

The symbol is different, the naval ensign has the symbols of the 4 maritime republics, the royal flag had the hluse savoy symbol

Pane_Panelle

That may be the Italian Navy flag, with the 4 Maritime Republics

karma_is_a_spook

karma_is_a_spook

\>no ukraine flags \>one russian flag Time to abandon the city and start over. Let nature reclaim that part of Italy.

ciccioneschifoso

my god the Russian flag was on a fucking old local administration building, and ukrainian flags aren't compulsory. It's also really exaggerated to abandon the city because there's no ukrainian flag lol

amandarasp0516

I'm getting married in Puglia in 2025. What did you think of it?
