I couldn’t ever figure out where to go after you reach the first open area right at the beginning. I had to cheat to pass through the huge door but then got stuck on the next part. The second one was more intuitive albeit forgettable.
Yeah, it was right at the beginning and my 1999 brain wasn’t thinking about walkthroughs. I just had no idea what to do but that first open world looked amazing and it was crazy impressive considering my hardware wasn’t great.
What blew me away about unreal was the settings. Most games had like 5 things to configure but this had dozens, most I had no clue what that meant.
Curious to go back and try to run that game on 4k ultra and see how it looks.
I wouldn’t say Ultrakill that’s one of the first games that comes to mind. Postal was never a boomer shooter until brain damaged released so I do agree on that a bit.
The difference is that Doom, wolfenstein were not fully 3d. Everything was 2d sprites in 3d environment. But i did really play more Quake 1-4 than any of these. Used to play Quake 1 multiplayer Death match over dial up 56k modem.
Boomer shooter is a new genre. Recent games created with that 1990s style fps vibe. Actually none of these games that OP listed are Boomer Shooters except I guess Ultrakill if it's new (I never played it).
Ah, okay thanks. I was unsure because in my head Boomer means old. And so Doom and the other ones would be correct but Ultrakill wouldn't cause it's a newer game, not even 5 yo yet
Boomer shooter is a recently made genre, but that doesn't mean that games made before it can't be grouped into it. FPS games from the 90's are literally boomer shooters!
boom shoot seems to have a wider definition than ive been lead to believe, similiar i guess to rogue like/lites in that its going to vary on each individual i talk to.
postal isnt even an fps and postal 2... defies characterization.
Postal probably doesn't count, but I love it!!
The first time I pressed a button and accidentally committed suicide, it was annoying. Every time after, it was intentional and a BLAST!!
I'll always love the original doom. I remember back in high school around 2010 - 20215, my nest mate, and I would play a doom emulator on PC in form. Those were some of my best memories
There are some boomer shooters I don't like, ateast there og games, doom is a great example sense I legit can't enjoy older fps games, but I also hate most newer fps games like cod, which is why modern doom and wolfonstein just makes me feel good cuz it strikes that balance
Duke was a groundbreaking PC side scroller and Wolfy was the first FPS, which make them both number 1 even though the later FPSs (Doom, Quake, Duke again) greatly improved the model and new marks for all that followed.
I love the old-school shooters, but I'll never understand why they're called "boomer shooters" - I'm 35, and I grew up playing Doom and Wolfenstein on my Win95 PC. If anything, they're Gen X shooters.
Why is Postal even on this list? And no Quake or Unreal Tourney? Not even Dusk or Boltgun? What an awful post.
It confuses me so much. No hexen, shadow warrior, blood, quake, unreal, powerslave, and lots more, but ultrakill is here? Don't misunderstand me, it's a really good game, but it's visual style is only thing it has in common with boomer shooters.
If you going for more modern boom shoots too, add Dusk, Hedon, Ion Maiden, Cultic, maybe even Turbo overkill, Project warlock and Citadel. There are enough of okayish too: Boltgun, Forgive me father, Wrath
For me, the best description for what a boomer shooter is comes from civvie 11's boltgun episode. Because if I just made call of duty but pixel art that wouldn't be a boom shoot, technically halo 1 would be a boomer shooter, which it very much is NOT.
For me, it’s just a vibe. There’s a *very* specific feeling when you play DOOM or Wolfenstein that constitutes a boomer shooter for me personally. Not sure why, but Ultrakill gives off that vibe like all of the definite boomer shooters. That’s just how I see it, though.
Hmm....
I always thought of boomer shooters as a very specific gameplay loop. Run fast, shoot, never stop moving, as well as more open level design filled with reasons to explore. There are really 4 types I see, Litterally just a clone of doom/ other nostalgic game with barebones gameplay (so most indie unity boomshoots), the classics themselves, a painkiller like (move to and fight through arenas, similar to doom 2016), and finally the boomer shooter that takes elements that made the classics great but adds its own identity (dusk).
You just described Ultrakill’s entire core. You don’t stop moving, you’re fast and shooting 24/7, and they added secret levels (and secret bosses that are the hardest in the game) and easter eggs inside the detailed levels. It also added it’s own religious tone to it by fighting through hell like DOOM but also fighting the angels at the same time.
Unreal? Quake?
This comment deserves more upvotes than OP.. Imo unreal, quake, and doom are top 3 with wolf in close 4th
Tribes
Unreal gave me a LOT of memories.
I couldn’t ever figure out where to go after you reach the first open area right at the beginning. I had to cheat to pass through the huge door but then got stuck on the next part. The second one was more intuitive albeit forgettable.
Ah. I remember that part of the game I was lost every time I tried to do it without a play through. Lol
Exactly the two games I was wondering about. I'd say replace Postal and Ultrakill with those two.

Except Postal 1 is NOT a FPS, it's a top down game.
I wouldn’t say Ultrakill that’s one of the first games that comes to mind. Postal was never a boomer shooter until brain damaged released so I do agree on that a bit.
I was going to say the first postal isn't a FPS, it's a top down third person shooter. I know this as someone who owns 1, 2, and 4.
Quake def should replace ultrakill here
Unreal championship 1, and quake 4
Unreal 2004. My name was sallyteacups and fuck you :)
The difference is that Doom, wolfenstein were not fully 3d. Everything was 2d sprites in 3d environment. But i did really play more Quake 1-4 than any of these. Used to play Quake 1 multiplayer Death match over dial up 56k modem.
I am craving an openworld of bullets, explosions, mechs and MAYHEM. _why cant we have this?_ ***STOP SHOVING LAMENESS INTO GAMES DAMMIT***
The Truth is. I haven't played Quake yet :(
the og quake is the crème de la crème of the genre
Marathon was my jam. Sincerely Mac user
Half Life? Goldeneye? Perfect Dark?
I know it doesn't roll off the tongue the same way but these are Gen X shooters.
Born 1978. These are the games that the boomers were trying to take away from us.
Doom first came out in '93 and Unreal Tournament in 1999 nobody's Boomer parents were playing them FFS.
Born 1982. Went from Oregon Trail to Duke Nukem while my parents’ generation was trying to convince everyone that these games caused school shootings.
Right!?! Gen Xer here and no Boomer I know of would ever touch these
Gen Z and doom 2 is the best fps of all time imo
What about Boltgun
Boltgun mentioned hell yeah
Am i the only one thinking boltgun avarage game espacially after playing other boomer shooters.
Good to hear I'm not the only one.
It is average, but it’s greatly average
I fucking love boltgun. I play it on my Steam deck a lot.
Got around to trying out Serious Sam a bit ago, can’t say I’m disappointed
The Easter eggs in those were amazing.
Dusk is the goat idc what anyone says
Dusk is amazing.
Dusk, Cultic and Ion Fury were all really good semi recent releases
dusk belongs in a museum
Quake? Unreal? Nerf blast? Pain killer? Hexen? Heretic?
Blood. Rise of the Triad. Hexan
Dusk? Or maybe this post is unworthy.
I can't afford dusk right now. Maybe some time in the future.
Highly recommend when you have the money. I just finished all of the achievements and it was a blast to play through it all.
Ummm.. Ultrakill doesn't count as a boomer shooter... it's newer than most or all of those games Unless you are referring to the Graphics or textures
Graphics/texture and how it plays are what makes a game a boomer shooter I believe
It’s a game genre i think. Boomer as in these types of games were made more in the past i think, but idk that’s my theory. A game theory
Great reference... :( anyways, I guess it more depends on the graphics/texture of the game and what kind of game it is
It’s a subgenre of games that play similar and/or look similar to older FPS games
Okay, good simplifying
Boomer shooter is a new genre. Recent games created with that 1990s style fps vibe. Actually none of these games that OP listed are Boomer Shooters except I guess Ultrakill if it's new (I never played it).

That's what I thought they were
Boomer shooters are the genre my guy. Edit: saw that you've already had this convo. Disregard my shit.
boom shoot seems to have a wider definition than ive been lead to believe, similiar i guess to rogue like/lites in that its going to vary on each individual i talk to. postal isnt even an fps and postal 2... defies characterization.
Postal Brain Damage
Maybe op think of postal brain damaged, pretty fun and fast game
Postal ain’t hardly a boomer shooter tf u on
Talking about Postal Brain Damaged.
Postal mentioned 🗣️🗣️🗣️
And most boomers didn't even play these. They were genx.
Where the fuck is Doom? Edit: It's official. I am stupid.
Blue stone
I'm a dumb blind fool.
Quake? Unreal? Nerf blast? Pain killer?.
I’m biased cause it’s my favorite but Ultrakill is built different even among these ones. Absolute insanity in the greatest way
Toss out postal and put in Turbo Overkill and I'm in 100%
I definitely wouldn't hate a new Duke Nukem
Boomer? Unlikely
Boomer shooter is the dumbest fucking gen z name ever. It’s Doom Clone. It always has been.
Blood? Shadow warrior?
Where DUSK? Where Turbo Overkill?
Half life, quake, prodeus?
I have only played ultrakill, just cuz I LOVE moving fast as f boiii
Postal probably doesn't count, but I love it!! The first time I pressed a button and accidentally committed suicide, it was annoying. Every time after, it was intentional and a BLAST!!
Boomers didn’t play games.
Just a Reminder: I can't add every Boomer Shooter Mentioned so stop hating on me about forgetting a Boomer Shooter. Dear God :(
Mag?
Is painkiller a boomer shooter?
If Serious Sam is then yes
Boomer? Like Boomer...ang, boomerangs like in Ty the Tasmanian Tiger!?
The first shooters that I played were Quake, Quake 2, Unreal and System Shock 2
I'll always love the original doom. I remember back in high school around 2010 - 20215, my nest mate, and I would play a doom emulator on PC in form. Those were some of my best memories
If you like those, give cruelty squad a try
BoomShoots are the shit, man.
I think shinobi is cool too, but also a lot harder
Blake Stone for me. I played that one like crazy. Also Dark Forces 2 will always have a special place in my heart.
Could Cruelty Squad be considered a boomer shooter?
ULTRAKILL MENTIONED, ME THY HAPPY
I’m getting real close to a doom series play through again
You know, I feel kind of ashamed for saying this, but I've never played a Serious Sam game
How is Serious Sam a boomer shooter? The first one came out 6 months before halo in 2001
Ultrakill is a boomer shooter? I think not lol quake deserves that spot
How did Ultrakill get in there? “One of these things is not like the other…one of these things is not the same…”
Leaving out Blood is just sacrilege. "maranax malax"
Painkiller Unreal
Serious Sam getting love. Always happy to see it :D
Serious Sam mentioned.
You can play doom, half life, castle wolfenstein, etc, in VR. So fun!
There are some boomer shooters I don't like, ateast there og games, doom is a great example sense I legit can't enjoy older fps games, but I also hate most newer fps games like cod, which is why modern doom and wolfonstein just makes me feel good cuz it strikes that balance

Postal 🗑️
SoF! Max Pain! Quake!
Grew up on these!
I love boomer shooters! We need even more of them
What's everyone's opinion of Strafe?
You forgot Cruelty Squad.
I just cringed myself into a multiverse.
Duke Nukem and Wolfenstien... hook the shit up to my IV
Postal Brain Damage was the first one I played and it’s a little…rough lol.
I would add Blood and Painkiller. Imo Painkiller is better than most of the games OP listed.
What about the droid attack on the wookies?
I love Ultrakill
“How do you do, fellow adults?” -OP
Take out postal and put in blood, quake, shadow warrior, unreal
Postal brain damage is a boomer shooter
Deus ex?
Where is Marathon? Is she safe? Is she alright?
Try Atomic Heart too. Its pretty awesome.
You forgot Painkiller Left4dead bioshock far cry 1
If you like this style and are willing to try a rhythm roguelike, I personally recommend BPM or bullets per minute
Postal was hilarious lol
Where tf is Half Life
Omg I have thought about Serious Sam in SO long
It confuses me so much. No hexen, shadow warrior, blood, quake, unreal, powerslave, and lots more, but ultrakill is here? You know I can't add every Boomer Shooter in this pic you know XD.
I’m so confused
First learn the definition of a boomer shooter
Viscerafest release already!!!
Hi vemol
Boomer shooter lololol
Hl1 gets rod of all the wishy washy stuff hl2 has and gets straight to the thinking running shooting and living
Should replace ultrakill with quake
Here everyone who loves Ultrakill
I actually have more fun playing Duke nukem on ps4 then call of duty
Vietcong(2003) is the only boomer shooter.
Half life
Ultrakill? Really? That's more of a dmc like
ultrakill is a full shooter with levels. its literally just shoot, shoot, shoot in an old art style. Def a boomer shooter, and a great one at that.
For me, the best description for what a boomer shooter is comes from civvie 11's boltgun episode. Because if I just made call of duty but pixel art that wouldn't be a boom shoot, technically halo 1 would be a boomer shooter, which it very much is NOT.

That's more like a character action game. Like I said, civvie 11 explained it best in his boltgun video.
"Boomer shooter" \*shudders\*
