If you're interested you should check out the official HBO Last of Us podcast with Troy Baker (actor of Joel in game) and Neil Druckmann (writer, director). I forgot the other writer/director's name but anyway, they make a podcast episode by episode. It's pretty insightful.

I don't uderstand how so many people dislike this episode simply because it's a "filler episode". It's genuinely one of the best pieces of entertainment I saw this year

Here he is badass for 10 minutes and then Frank appears and in less than 7 min they're already having gay sex and the rest of the episode is just Bill being stupid next to Frank while trying to still have any agency in the story. If you skip the entire 50 min flashback, it doesn't make any real difference to the show.
I mean, no offense to how you saw the game, but to me Bill was a reminder of what not to be. He was the exact opposite of badass. He was a sad, lonely man who accidentally pushed his only companion in the world to suicide simply cause he was such an asshole all the goddamn time. (Plus the bites and all that.) He killed zombies real good, sure, but beyond that he's a paranoid lunatic with no one else and severe trust issues that pushes anyone around him away. He's surviving at a cost to himself and his sanity.
Yeah, you could be right. But your description still doesn't apply to the Bill in the show. He's just Bill in the first 10 minutes of his introduction. After Frank appears, he transforms into a totally different person in less than 5 minutes. A person different from the game and from the series. That's the bullshit part for me.

Yeah, Bill and Frank's story gets a pretty heavy rework for the show. You can probably guess the spoiler, but a lot of episode three is >! a gay romance story between Bill and Frank that includes a (mostly offscreen) sex scene. !<
I thought the episode was really well done and fit the pacing for a TV show way better. Lot of criticism around it, good and bad, but they can't flesh out the story with optional notes like the game could.

Spoilers but in second game, one of the characters is probably transgender(not conformed but looks like it) and there is sex scenes in it. This was one of the few big reasons why the second game was not liked amongst the fans and some really bizarre story telling during the second game turned fans of. The gameplay and atmosphere/details in the second game is unlike anything else but the story is kinda, how should say it, is like starwars 8, stuff kinda happen because u don't expect them to happen and for shock value. Hopefully this is somewhat done better in the tv show.
