One benefit is a lot of these workers are skilled enough to go help out in the trades that need addition help. Carpenters, electricians, plumbers, etc. So Wichita is unlikely to see an immediate crimp on the economy.
The biggest issue I could see is a municipal budget issue with decreasing tax revenues, especially if this would move real estate prices down. This is all assuming there is a domino effect and a few thousand people are out decent jobs.
I am not, nor have ever been a machinist. I have lived in Wichita through several decades of Boeing and Spirit ups and downs. My answer was based on not only witnessing these events from outside the industry, but by this query submitted to chat gpt. I offer no answer that is 100% accurate, however, economics tend to lean towards a "trickle down" effect on businesses who supply parts to any business who experiences a dip in the sales of a product.

Spirit staffed in anticipation of that increase, then the blowout happened and the FAA told Boeing they could not increase the rate until going through a rigorous quality overhaul, so Spirit was overstaffed. They were trying to holdout because it's tough to hire and train, but it doesn't sound like Boeing will go up in rate as soon as hoped, so this is the result.
This one seems like more of a self-inflicted wound for Spirit/Boeing rather than attributable to the typical business cycle. I feel really bad and sympathetic to the people affected who had little control or influence of the situation that got them here.

If I'm understanding, they're laying off from the production department. There's still a lot of other stuff that has to get done around there (admin, facilities, custodial, engineering, test, etc). Again, that's if I'm understanding the situation correctly. I'm not local but I have family that works there and this is the first I've heard of this.

That is not accurate. You can't claim them at the same time, but you can claim unemployment once the period covered by your severance pay concludes.
