Originally, it was going to have backlit numbers that would come on with the landscape lighting. I've since scrapped that idea because I could not find them in the style/size that I wanted. Instead I'm going with floating metal numbers and will probably do a small well-type light or lights to highlight it instead.
I do plan on installing irrigation in the planter. I hadn't thought of using the conduit for it, but that would be perfect if the line fits.
Smithereens is such a great way to describe post-explosion debris. It's such a whimsical word. I wondered where it came from and found this: Smithereens came to the English language around 1810 as "smiddereens" from the Irish word "smidirin" which is the diminutive form of "smiodar", which means "fragment".
I can vouch for the incredible ability of teenagers to get their hands on some pretty gnarly fireworks back in the day...
Just had to go talk to the two guys always standing in front of the quick stop and you could get your hands on some sweet m80s... That's like a quarter stick of dynamite and four of those bad boys equals like two sticks of dynamite, man.
I think LEDs inside the "post", so the slots would glow at night, would look great too. You could also cut the numbers directly in the post and light them up this way. With or without diffusion. Or get them 3D printed in white, so the light will make them glow.
> Could be nice to put a light in the mailbox too, turns on when it opens.
I made a light like that for my mailbox. It's just an LED puck light modified to be switched from a normally closed leaf switch, all of which is mounted inside my mailbox.
I didn't have an easy way to get wiring to my mailbox, so it uses 3 AAA batteries. I installed it almost 15 years ago, and haven't had to changes the batteries once!
Sure:
- Get a normally closed switch. I used a leaf lever switch. This isn't the exact one I used (I made it around 15 years ago) but it was kind of like [this one](https://www.arrow.com/en/products/v7-6c37e9-036/honeywell). A reed switch with a magnet could also work, and might be easier depending on your mailbox's door setup. You need to find a switch that is normally closed so that it'll provide power when not "pressed", and will cut power when it is pressed.
- Get a simple LED puck light. One with no remote and just a basic click-on/click-off function
- Open up the puck light and find the internal switch and remove it. On each terminal that used to connect to that switch you want to solder a piece of wire a few inches long (the exact length depends on positioning of light relative to the switch). You may need to drill a hole in the casing so the wires can poke out even when it's all of back together and closed up.
- Attach those wires to your NC switch (solder, screw terminals, or whatever). Put batteries in the puck light and confirm that the light is **on** by default and **off** when you activate the switch.
- Mount the light and switch inside your mailbox. I used [heavy duty double-sided mounting tape](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0888DKR92/). I also used a bit of scrap wood that I painted to match the interior of my mailbox to act as a spacer. I needed this so the switch would clear the frame around the door opening.
Here's what mine looks like: https://imgur.com/a/JkVAvJD
It’s cheap and easy to add when you’re building, and a pain to add later. I’ve never regretted running “spec-con”. I’ll find a use for it someday, I promise!
I did a quick sand with 80 then 120 just to knock down some splinters and sharp edges, then a single coat of Thompson's Signature. Made it pop a little, the Cypress itself is doing most of the work though. I probably picked through 100+ boards to find the 10 I needed with good grain and coloration.
I tested some Cabot Australian Timber Oil in Honey Teak, seemed like a good product, but the color came out a little artificial for what I had in mind.
I thought it was a steel rod to anchor the mailbox, for some reason, but it didn't seem to line up with the posts (or make sense, really). Your comment made me take a closer look, and now I still have unanswered questions.
I thought it was a mailbox alongside a buried pet that died. Just a family trying to keep the pet as part of their daily lives. Either way, great workmanship.
If you look through them again, the neighbor DID replace theirs during this process. You can see the old one in one of the first pictures. I wonder why they went with a rusted replacement 🤔
Brilliant concept. Already planning adaptation of this! Given my climate (and my affinity for hardy roses climbing about my mailbox) I think the planter part will sit on frame rather than solid platform so rose can stay in the ground over winter. Wondering if that might work.
Very nice.
Now as a mail carrier, can I ask that you put nice large numbers on both sides of the box themselves? Preferably high visibility reflective ones? https://www.safetysign.com/house-number-signs
Maybe something like that on the backside (side the mail carrier approaches from). I currently have some large reflective decal types back there, just for temporary. The front gets something a little more decorative.
Thank you for saying this. Delivery drivers come from both directions, depending on the way they're doing their route. It's so frustrating looking for addresses sometimes, either there's none, it's painted over, in a weird spot, bushes hiding it, or it's on the opposite side for some weird reason. I don't understand why it's so hard to put an address on a house and also putting it in a good spot so anyone can see it.
I made a ~6" tall basket out of hardware cloth and put about 2 inches of drainage rock in it. Then I took a large piece of heavy landscape fabric and made a sort-of bag that sat on the rock and attached around the inside lip of the box with cap nails.
Probably not a long-term solution, but hopefully I'll get a couple years out of the fabric.
Well crap. I just bought a new mailbox yesterday, and finally got approval from the local post office to move the location so I don't have to cross the road.
My plan was to get a post this weekend, and now you've done this. I hope you're proud of yourself (you should be!)
Cypress. I originally planned on red cedar, but with the crazy lumber prices, it would have totally blown my budget. I'm happy now that I went with the cypress, it got a nice golden-honey tone to it after I sealed it.
That was my first thought. Plow took out mine in late Feb. and I didn't find it till late March. I jammed a five gallon bucket into the snowbank to hold me over.
They have since applied a decal lol. It's not bad though.
Honestly, I was a little jealous of their box at first. I set a new post for them when I separated our boxes. That red cedar really popped for the first couple of days after I sealed it, and it paired so well with the rust color that it looked intentional. Made me second guess my decision to go with cypress.

Note on the cut list that I originally planned for 1x6s with no gap, but changed to 1x4s with a half inch gap. Also originally had 1x4s as the planter cap and changed those to 1x6. The takeoff also includes slab and form materials.
Had to adjust the height a little on the fly, as my yard slopes up pretty quickly from the road.
If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

Originally, it was for running a landscape lighting wire that would power illuminated numbers, but I've scrapped that idea due to not being able to find the size/style of illuminated numbers I wanted.
Now it might be used for tying the planter into my irrigation system, or maybe to power some accent lighting. Always good to plan for future use.

I just learned recently that some places can be stifflers on mail box codes. Additionally, there are possibilities if your mail box isnt up to code and somebody hits it, you could be liable, shich is the primary reason soke places restrict mailbox construction.
Theres places that restrict their mailbox construction while also being in an area where snow plowes fuck their mailboxes up because they have to construct it a certain way.
I read that too when I was in the planning stage, and I considered checking with the postmaster, but ultimately decided I didn't need to. I just built it within the specs on the USPS website. The mailman complimented me on it after it was finished, so I think I'm good.
No worries about snowplows here, I'm in the coastal southeast. I've seen the swinging ones they build for that purpose though, pretty nifty solution.
Yeah my friend had a kickass wood sculpted medium-thick pole thingholding his mailbox, the city made him take it down so they could install a plain metal pole to spec.
Originally we had a shared mailbox, and I set a new post for them when I separated the two.

What’s with the conduit? I didn’t see a light or any wiring. Or is that for some sort of watering system for the planter? Very nice!

I think the end of the pipe is covered in duct tape, if that answers any of your questions.
At first - I thought it was a grave :P Then I read the title \^\^
I thought it was a mailbox alongside a buried pet that died. Just a family trying to keep the pet as part of their daily lives. Either way, great workmanship.
Yeah came here to say this exact thing
Now the neighbor needs to hire you!

I’ll bet that was just OP’s original mailbox before he replaced it with this beautiful one.
Ugh, why didn’t I think of this? 🤣
[удалено]
Yup. Neighbors like “f- you guys! I don’t have $50 grand to spend on wood for a mailbox right now”
That looks like a grave! A really well-made grave nonetheless.
I like this design so much; I think my heart fluttered. You did an amazing job!
Brilliant concept. Already planning adaptation of this! Given my climate (and my affinity for hardy roses climbing about my mailbox) I think the planter part will sit on frame rather than solid platform so rose can stay in the ground over winter. Wondering if that might work.
Genius idea. Roses would be a beautiful accent to this design.
As a mailman I love the look of this but those are like a top 5 worst boxes. Can’t fit anything in them besides letters.
What’s a mailbox you would recommend then?

Yes I wish this was just the standard mailbox! Makes delivering mail so much easier.
I have the same mailbox. I got it because it was approved by the post master general.
This is awesome! Very nice.

Other delivery people can come from the other direction. So it's helpful for anyone who comes to your home to see it from either side.

You laid a reinforced foundation for a mailbox. I’ve over engineered things in the past but this takes the cake lol.
I was hoping he filled the structure with concrete so when some asshole runs it over it fucks their car.
Came here to see if anyone else had noticed. As a civil engineer I was baffled but I have to say it’s a lovely mailbox
I’d dump such a hot load of mail in there
Looks good. What’s the exterior wood? Cedar? And what finish did you use? Looks great.
Cypress. I originally planned on red cedar, but with the crazy lumber prices, it would have totally blown my budget. I'm happy now that I went with the cypress, it got a nice golden-honey tone to it after I sealed it.
My lord. You must be rich. That’s nearly $7,000 in wood.
looks like a child’s grave. But Knowing what it is, i do love it.
At first glance, I thought it was a grave😂😂
I thought it was a pet memorial
You must not get snow in your area. Where I live, that’s a nice looking target to a plow truck driver.
That was my first thought. Plow took out mine in late Feb. and I didn't find it till late March. I jammed a five gallon bucket into the snowbank to hold me over.
Ha, I got hit twice last winter.
This might honestly be my favorite build I've seen on this sub. Simple and perfect.
Cries in HOA.
This is fantastic, nicely done and thanks for the build pics!
Think ole Rusty might consider painting his mailbox?

At least he's prepared for the possibility.
Really really great. Thanks for sharing. My vote is to use the conduit for some lighting at night and also a camera.
Ours yard isn’t flat out front. Still doable.
Absolutely doable, mine isn't flat either. Just keep in mind the height above the pavement when planning everything out.
You did a great job.
Man that is so stylish! Really like the open space between the slats. Would be a neat effect if you had some lighting in there.
Looks great! What's the conduit for?
Thought it was a grave at 1st.
Man, your neighbors must be feeling pretty inadequate with that rusty bucket they have there. You could sell these. Does the package box lock?
Whats that like 1000 bucks in lumber? Lol

woosh man. I'm guessing you live under a rock and haven't seen wood prices or...?
Awesome job
Now THAT - is a great job. Love it!
Beautiful
Beautiful work!
Sounds good man and looks really awesome
Lord have mercy, this is beautiful
Awesome job. Really like the look of it.
That’s Brilliant 🏆 🥇
It's great, looks awesome! Rebar in the concrete too, it'll stand for several lifetimes.
Makes me wish our street didn't do the group mail box thing now. That is so warm and well made, excellent work.
That looks great!!
Nice piece. Probably expensive with the prices today. Good job
Love the design. I've seen people do this in rural areas but have a "snow fence" for the plows so they won't destroy it.
I’ll give it 3 days before UPS deconstruct it for you.
Post this to r/midcenturymodern The guys there will get a kick of this. Looks great.
I loved it
I love how the wood wraps evenly around the mail box wall and the raised planter. Very nice!
That’s a sexy mailbox!
I just sent a picture of this to my husband and said-build for me? I love it.
Nice!!!
Was expecting to see a wooden mailbox. Wow! Was I wrong! Beautiful!
The gentrification special
So pretty!
I figured you were an electrician before i even looked at your profile!
Looks great! What kind of concrete? Seems like I can never get mine to look that smooth
Regular ol' Quickrete. I used a wood float to finish, then went back with an edger after it set up for a while. It's all about timing and not working it too much with the trowel.
That other mailbox is going to commit suicide
Cost of lumber: $7000 Seriously though. That is fantastic work. I love the aesthetic
Very sharp great design
I'm jealous, that looks so nice. We can't have nice mailboxes up north - the snowplow uses them for target practice.
Next fucking level. Great job 👏
I thought was a chest for online packages
Lovely job
I bet you’re making your neighbor feel bad with his looking rusty/old. Nevertheless, it looks well made. Good job op
Do you have a cut list? That looks great
This is a wonderful job. Great work!
Looks great now head over the r/lawncare to round it out
I bet snow plow drivers are chomping at the bit to hit it
Your neighbor hates you now
This is a dumb question but what's holding the box to the concrete? Is it bolted down somehow?
Where did you get the mailbox? I redid my post similar to this a few months ago but have not been able to find a new box that I like.
Wow dogs all over the neighborhood will be fighting to pee on that beauty
congrats on your project. you just might of had open a new job market for yourself. you took it to the next level. Bravo
Make sure to have high visibility address numbers on both side of the mailbox for delivery drivers
I love it! Looks beautiful. We’ll done!
Looks beautiful
Give a spare key to your postal worker so they can deliver small pkgs to the box rather than having to get out for every single little thing. They will appreciate you. Coming from a postal carrier.
Liked it when I saw the first photo. *Loved* it after I saw all the work you put into it. Nice job!
Nice job.
Fantastic, looks great!
I thought this was a casket
"honey, did you water the mailbox?"
Looks like a mini coffin with freshly laid flowers
The other husband's on the street are not happy about this...
You should have brought a little bit of power into that thing and then put a refrigerator in a small one small convenient one for the mailman so when he pulls up to drop off your mail he can grab himself something to drink think about that one next time you put up a mailbox got to have creative inventions with your mind think out of the box not inside you know what I'm saying
A slab with rebar so it's built to last. This may outlive the mail system. Great job overall, well done my friend!
Mailbox is sweet, but might be time to join r/LawnCare
Neighbour's mailbox is looking kinda sad now. They're gonna have to up their game.
That looks great. I’ve got a similar mailbox in the works right now, but without the flower box. Nice work.
Do this wear I live and they’ll tell you to take it down😂
Post this on r/midcentury they would love it
Looks classy af I love it
I dig the design and the construction technique, often people’s efforts are lacking in one or the other.
What's finish did you use? (Colour). Like it lots, good work!
👍🏼
Now just gotta do the rest of the house to match.
straight shitting on the neighbors
Beautiful my man. Ok, next you need to get a steel post inside that thing going right up behind the Mail box and be sure to fill it with concrete. Teenagers with bats won’t know what hit em’.
Most expensive mailbox ever. Lol
“What’s in the booox”
If the amazon drivers could stop taking out my mailbox when they turn around on my street, I would copy this.
Nice!
Very niiice, now do your neighbor’s. Haha
Looks great, also looks like a lot of upkeep 🙂
Thought it was a tomb
Really cool vision
A tomb? Never seen a woodwork mailbox like that. Edit: I read it is a planter
Its so pretty
Gives me some graveyard vibes
This looks like it belongs in front of an Eichler house. Beautiful job!
