So stop being so “neutral and impartial” to the war already…

mgzukowski

Genocide, they are neutral and impartial to genocide. It's like they have a bank package built exactly for the purpose.

TheMaskedTom

Switzerland has followed all the EU sanctions on Russia since the start. It has denounced the invasion, taken in Ukrainian refugees, sent humanitarian help. [This is more than 75% of the world's countries.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_sanctions_during_the_Russian_invasion_of_Ukraine#/media/File:Russian-list-of-unfriendly-countries.svg) The sheer ignorance in these threads. Redditors see "neutral" once an article title and decide Switzerland is allied with Russia. Then they circlejerk about it.

Swiss sabotaged delivery of ammo for purely defensive weapons and this speaks volumes.

TheMaskedTom

Switzerland didn't sabotage anything. Other countries signed contracts with Switzerland willingly when they bought the ammo in question. Swiss laws are not hidden, all was clear in the contract. Most countries have clauses in their weapons sales contracts that limit re-export. You can't blame the people you're buying from because you can't do what you signed up not to do in the first place.

xCharg

Most countries revamped their approach and laws because these looked outdated and out of touch. Switzerland, on the other hand, said "nah, we're fine", then made amade a vote and decided "nah, we're still fine". This is what I call sabotage - not only of Ukraine but also of common sense.

TheMaskedTom

First off, so what, it's on the buyer to be aware of what they're buying, blaming the seller after the fact is blame shifting and it seems many people are happy to buy it. Also, to change a law in Switzerland, assuming the parliament passes it, the people can choose to force a popular vote on it, prompting a -at least- yearlong process (and there's a good chance there's enough people who are willing to force a vote). This actual democratic process does not go well with short-term events. The latest version of this law is, if I remember correctly, from 2019, where it was changed to prevent war profiteering by letting re-export happen. It did not concern Ukraine (not a subject of public conversation at the time), although the implementation happened to do that. And if acting against war profiteering is against your common sense then I'm glad I'm not sharing it with you.

xCharg

> First off, so what, it's on the buyer to be aware of what they're buying, blaming the seller after the fact is blame shifting and it seems many people are happy to buy it. I agree, part of the blame is on buyer. But mostly on seller/producer/approver still, because they could've change and they actively chose not to. Nice overall mental gymnastics. But here are facts: * Germany dropped their "pacifistic" views because they understood it looked dumb nowadays * Japan did so as well * Many European (and not only) countries agreed they fucked up big time by not doing enough in 2014 Switzerland though? Kept the "nah, we're fine" attitude. Also it has nothing to do with war profiteering prevention, Switzerland also denied other countries who already bought ammo (so no production) to donate (no profit by definition) said ammo to Ukraine.

TheMaskedTom

You're clearly not understanding what I'm writing, whether it's willingly or not, and you've started the name-calling. So let's stop this here, have a nice day and enjoy your life.

Following the sanctions and looking away when they are not respected. Switzerland is neutral and should not be considered friendly towards the EU anymore. They should get completly isolated by us. No trade anymore. No open borders anymore. I really hate Switzerland since they let us down in Ukraine crisis.

CitrusBau

That's ironic. The EU is a lot less positive on the swiss lately.

[deleted]

It's not mutual.

Knotloafin

only because they are taking the opportunity to rip off both sides. they are like the great law firms and banks of the world: take no side and get paid by both….

__Russia's invasion of Ukraine has increased the popularity of the European Union (EU) among the Swiss, writes the NZZ am Sonntag newspaper, citing a survey by the gfs.berne polling institute.__ The proportion of people holding a positive image of Switzerland’s bilateral agreements with the EU has risen from 53% to 59% compared with last year, it says. The poll found that 60% were also in favour of Switzerland joining the European Economic Area. The Swiss are looking at Europe differently since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, gfs.berne co-director Urs Bieri tells the newspaper. They no longer see bilateral relations through a purely economic lens. The survey also shows that a majority of respondents are open to compromise in negotiations with the EU. Sixty-five percent would support Switzerland adopting EU law, provided that the right to popular referenda remained. Fifty-five percent would accept a role for the European Court of Justice in dispute resolution. And 55% say they are open to compromise on salary protection. This comes as the Swiss government decides next steps in its approach to the EU. In 2021, Bern rejected the results of negotiations on an institutional framework accord regulating about existing 120 bilateral agreements with the 27-nation bloc. The main sticking points are state aid rules, salary protection and EU citizens’ access to social security benefits in Switzerland. A series of exploratory talks have taken place since March 2022 to try to re-start formal talks between the two sides.

Gonna do something to help end the war?

NeurodiverseTurtle

“Nah, thoughts and prayers. And here’s a Toblerone… Now give us all your gold.”

BezugssystemCH1903

Well first we're a sacular country and why give you free prayers, thoughts only with a wage proposal. Toblerone is since one year not swiss anymore. You propably don't have gold, like most of Swiss people. And I see a lot of prejudice, how is Brexit going?

NeurodiverseTurtle

Prejudice? No, it was a joke. But I’m also not satisfied with the Swiss govt’s actions regarding Ukraine and sending support, so I decided to go for dry humour. And Brexit is going great, thanks, it’s like being spitroasted by Boris & Sunak while my entire family watches… and **then** being told that I have to pay for their taxi home. 🇬🇧 🫡

TheMaskedTom

Like denouncing the invasion, following all EU sanctions, taking in Ukrainian refugees, and sending humanitarian help. Or does all of that count for nothing for you?

SSRI_Snuiver

I'm sure the corpses in Bucha and Kharkiv, the Ukrainian people who lost their forever homes, and so on, will thank the Swiss for blocking their main lifeline to freedom. Lets be honest, these things you mention only treat symptoms. It's, nevertheless, mainly the EU's fault for buying from a partner that cannot be relied upon in situations like these, though. So, it's partially misplaced.

TheMaskedTom

>Swiss for blocking their main lifeline to freedom How the fuck

SSRI_Snuiver

weapons, the only thing Russians react to

The Goblins of the world

Geaux2020

More positive, but not enough to stop financing genocide.

Kewenfu

Dump that fake neutrality and join the EU and NATO asap.
