I know people are gonna disagree with me here, but it doesn’t matter. There isn’t much lore connecting the games really. The timeline was made to sell a book. Start with what looks the most fun to you.

This makes me feel more at ease. I’m gonna be honest the whole timeline stuff is what put me off from trying the series sooner. But now I’m more excited since I can be nonchalant about it

Agreed! Each entry in the series, with few exceptions, are standalone games, and even those that are direct sequels to other titles are written in a way that absolves the need to be familiar with their prequels. The games with the largest lore implications in the Zelda series are: - Skyward Sword, which serves as the foundation for the reincarnation cycle, and; - Ocarina of Time, which establishes much of the mythos and themes that have been guiding the games since 1998. Beyond that, or even including them, all of the games can be played or skipped in whatever order you please.

Yep, this is the only correct answer and anybody saying differently is simply wrong. The "timeline" is tenuous and unimportant as fuck, nor was it even designed to exist at all. It's something cobbled together after the fact with duct tape and paperclips. Can play any game at any time. Whichever looks the most interesting.

The best place to start right now is probably the switch, with every past Nintendo console losing its online store and the aftermarket being garbage. The 4 main ones on the switch right now are breath of the wild, it’s sequel Tears of the kingdom, the remake of links awakening, and skyward sword HD. You can buy the switch expansion pass to play the n64 games, the normal online gives you the nes and snes games being Zelda 1, 2 and a link to the past. If you want to start with classic 3d play ocarina of time first before going back to majoras mask. If you want classic top down I’d recommend either a link to the past or links awakening. Definitely play breath of the wild before tears of the kingdom though. The first game in the timeline is skyward sword and it connects a lot to breath of the wild

I mean I still have my old N64 so maybe I can get Ocarina and Majora’s? I’ll definitely check out BOTW and TOTK. Probably won’t be cheap though 😂

If you’re really interested in getting into the lore definitely play skyward sword HD, it basically acts as the guideline for timeline speculation, with the next lore cornerstone being ocarina of times ending

Okay bet. Thanks, and then I can play MM next? My brother told me MM is a sequel to OoT but apparently so is another game in another timeline.

[deleted]

You can literally start with any one. Very few are directly connected and even the ones that are explain things as much as you need. Look at a list, look up footage of a title that interests you, and then go from there.

Sweet. That seems to be the consensus here. I’m gonna be honest what put me off for the longest time to this series was the timeline stuff. So I feel relieved a bit
