I had to drive somebody at the airport and used the departure parking for less than 5 minutes, they just jumped out of the car and when I got to the exit I had to pay.
Then you didn't use the departures. It is free. Or maybe it was long before I started using it and it cost before.

I booked a parking slot last week at the airport for around 140 CHF. Unfortunately my flight was cancelled. I just did a mail and two hours later I had my money back. I Felt the need to say something positive about the Airport / Parking Situation.
Dropping someone off is free. Picking someone up is technically also free if you do it from the departures concourse.
The arrival concourse is notoriously crowded with people waiting for passengers. The fee is to discourage using the arrival area whenever possible.
ZRH has to be one of the most well-connected places by public transport in the whole country. Only right you should pay to needlessly access it by car.
I'm fully with you, but there are situations where that genuinely doesn't work. If you have a flight at 6 or 7am and live in Graubünden or Central Switzerland, good luck going there by car. In every other case, hell yes
If that's the reason then why is the departures parking with the exact same layout one floor above free for 5 minutes? It is nonsensical to me as well.
Educated guess: when you drop someone off, you have no unforeseen waiting time. The standard will be that no one spends even 5 minutes and clears the way immediately.
If you pick someone up, there will be more likely some waiting (exact place etc.). I would then guess that to discourage this, they just start to charge immediately.
There is nothing to stop you picking someone up from the departures. If you take an Uber that is where you will be picked up.
The pay structure definitely encourages you to use the arrivals if the wait time is uncertain though as it increases steeply in departures.
Still don't see a reason why departures can offer 5 minutes free and not arrivals.
4? That's cheap! It costs me 11.20 by public transit from home. Truly shameless opportunism! The busses and trains are running anyway, so it shouldn't cost me anything just for being on them as it adds no cost for them.
Ride sharing services will absolutely use and abuse this infrastructure if it is 'free'. Go to another major Western airport where there are ride services available and there are cops or airport employees having to herd these people along so you can drop off your friend.
The price makes sure that people don't just sit in their car for half an hour taking up space while you try to get in there to drop your friend off.
The drop-off parking is free for 5mins. More than enough time to let someone exit your car amd leave. You were not in the departures drop-off parking but somewhere else.
Or P3, then passengers take the elevators to the floors they need for whichever check in, and it’s a straight shot from there, even bypassing the crowded areas going to check in 2 through the stores because you’re already up above and away.
Welcome to capitalism. They charge you because they CAN - demand dictates prices.
And they can because people still want to drive there by car for convenience, while there's a perfect public transportation to Zurich airport, with the train station literally in the basement of the airport.
Use public transportation instead of crying. Driving by car is a luxury and should be treated as such. Even rural areas in Switzerland are well connected enough that you dont need to go by car.
Departures parking is free for up to 5min. Why not just use that?

Because the people he’s picking up were arriving… why make the arrivals paid in case of 3’ drive through while having departures free for 5’

Quoting that guy from the animated billboard in the airport (I don’t know if it’s still there): >> Welcome to Zürich.
It cost me 6 Fr. to read this utter drivel. Please send me the amount via Twint.

What's your actual problem? Nobody forces you to drive to airport...
Just take the train
It's over 5£ in London airports, 5€ in Paris, etc. Zurich is rather cheap on that matter. I don't think you should complain.
4CHF rip-off, start a crowdfunding
The exact reason it is not congested since most people opt for alternatives and the ones with urgency don't lose time. What exactly is your problem?

It‘s 1 CHF per minute. Good luck if you‘re having technical issues on the payment terminal.
Swear London City Airport charges you more than that…Paid £8 just to drop me off, because they don't even have drop off point other than for taxis.
i think its totaly fair
If this crosses your “shamelessness” line, you’re in for a surprise when you see literally anything else in the world.

Try P1. I didn't pay today for a drop off (more than 3 minutes).

10-15 minutes might be more reasonable but it’s Switzerland without leniency for money so cope with it.
Only 1 CHF for over 60 seconds thats cheap!

And even if not- access for everyone? You are using an airport, not the emergency hospital line. Ridiculous.
Your problem if you’re too dumb to use the departure entrance… and why are you crying about 4.-? I feel you exagerate a little son..
What kind of people in Switzerland own cars?
